ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Volunteers who made the 2014 Albany Marathon a success got some recognition tonight.

Organizers held their first volunteer appreciation party at the Art Park. Volunteers were encouraged to wear their pink T-shirts they wore on the day of the race. Plaques and certificates were given out to sponsors and water station groups. Organizers say the marathon can't operate without volunteers.

"It takes the whole community and the whole city to put on this event. The marathon board wanted to pay recognition and just celebrate them all coming together and helping us put on a great event," said Rashelle Beasley.

More than 1000 volunteers manned water stations and served as road marshals. Many have helped with the marathon for each of the last eight years.
