ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

Dozens of people were taken into custody around Ashburn over the Easter weekend during citywide road checks.

The Ashburn Police Department asked Turner County Deputies and Georgia State Troopers to help patrol outlying areas of the city after having problems with large parties in recent years.

Police Chief Joe Saxon said 26 people, mostly from out of town, were arrested for various traffic violations. Nine were charged with D.U.I.

"Those drivers that are impaired are also safe, and I think people tend to forget that," said Chief Joe Saxon, Ashburn Police Department. "When we look at DUIs, that we take the person behind the wheel, and we make them safe as well as other people that are motoring."

Saxon said officers recovered guns during some of the stops. He said only four of those arrested were from Ashburn, and said others taken into custody were from Savannah and Columbus.
