ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Nearly 3 million Michael's customers may have had their accounts breached by criminals.

Officials say customers who used credit or debit cards at the Albany Michael's store between May 8, 2013 and July 29, 2013 are at risk.

Michael's CEO issued a statement saying card numbers and expiration dates were grabbed by criminals using sophisticated malware that had not been encountered by Michael's security firms.

The company does not think hackers got access to pin numbers or other personal information. South Georgia law enforcers say customers should keep a close watch on accounts.

"If they do see any suspicious activity on their accounts, call their credit agency and also contact law enforcement."

Michael's breach represents one of the largest cybersecurity breaches to hit a retailer.

Michael's said affected customers will be offered identity protection and credit monitoring services for a year.
