SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

Some South Georgia artists will showcase paintings, poetry and other art works in Sylvester Friday evening.

The City is hosting its People, Place and Purpose art gala for the first time in celebration of Georgia Cities Week.

Professional and amateur artists will feature their best work along with that from local students. The festival organizers said passion for the arts is important part of any community.

"You can take a tour if you like, look at some of the works that we have for tonight," said Angel Gray, Art Gala Chair. "But we invite people to come out and experience it their selves and talk with artists, get to know them.  Who knows, we might lighten your passion here in Sylvester."

Gray said the free event is appropriate for all ages. She said visitors can listen to opera, or see the locally produced award winning film "Picture Show."

The event opens at 6pm, and runs until 9pm.
