Albany panhandlers are going to jail

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Two men were arrested last night, one at the corner of Slappey and the bypass, the other at Stuart and Palmyra.   They're charged with soliciting.

A third man, asking for money, was arrested outside Publix in Albany Wednesday night.   He's charged with being on business property after hours.

Mayor Dorothy Hubbard said a business owner complained that panhandlers were scaring customers.     "I think it's a balancing act.  I think we have to be sensitive to the needs of the people who are actually doing that. As well sensitive to the needs of the customers and the businesses."

Soliciting or panhandling is a misdemeanor.
