ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Governor Nathan Deal signed the Flint River Drought Protection Act today.

It will restrict farmers from drawing water from the Flint and some of its tributaries during severe drought. Governor deal says it protects wildlife, water resources and the rights of property owners.

"For our department of environmental development to have the authority to take action to restrict the use of certain types of ground water in the time of a severe drought," Deal said. "While at the same time protecting the property rights of farmers."

The state would pay farmers to limit their irrigation and not take extra water added to drought-parched streams to prevent wildlife from dying off.
