ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

Ashburn is making plans to start a farmers market.

Organizers plan to use the historic tabernacle near the intersection of South Gordon Street and East Madison Avenue.

This weekend, they're hosting an event for area farmers to come and talk about what produce they could sell. Community members are also invited to share their input.

"It unites a community. It provides a common ground. People can come together and have the experience of wholesome, organic foods," said Illya Copeland, the Community Development Director and Main Street Director for the City of Ashburn.

"The area that we live here is right in between Tifton and Cordele and we are a farming belt. If anyone can have fresh produce, right here is where it's produced. And this will give people an opportunity to come here at one central location and purchase their produce. It'll be fresh, Georgia grown produce," said Samuel Brown, a Turner County school board member and farmer.

The event is this Saturday at 9:30am at the historic tabernacle in Ashburn.

Organizers say the idea is tied to the main street program which the city became part of this year.  Their goal is to open the farmers market by the end of May.
