Officials with the Douglas Police Department tell WALB that Nevada Powell is in custody at the Coffee Co. jail, in connection to a bank robbery.

Assistant Chief Brannen Pruette says that officer took Powell into custody approximately 10:30AM, after a tire on his white SUV getaway vehicle blew out near the Flash Foods on North Gaskins.

Pruette said that police received multiple reports of threats called in that morning to schools and the hospital. Schools in the area were placed on 'lockdown' status.

"All of our schools and Coffee Regional medical center. So he immediately turned around and contacted all of our principals and told them that they needed to go into lockdown," said Kim Clayton of the Coffee Co. School System.

Police officers and sheriff's deputies responded to those locations to check it out, and then they got a call about the bank robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank on South Peterson Street.

Officers headed that way, and spotted a Powell running away from the bank. They went after him, and caught him with money from the bank, when his tire blew out.

The GBI is investigating a package the man left at the bank. The FBI is also investigating, since any crime against a bank is a federal offense.

This robbery is eerily similar to the still unsolved bank robbery of the Bank of Alapaha several weeks ago, in which a suspicious package was left inside the bank. In that case, a stolen burned out car was found outside town.

The FBI is expected to examine whether these two robberies were committed by the same people.

WALB's Colter Anstaett will have more details as soon as they are available.
