ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

You may soon have to dig a little deeper in your pockets to ride a bus in Albany.

The Albany Transit Authority wants to raise the fare 45 cents over the next four years.

The Authority wants to start with a 25 cent hike on July 1st, then raise it by a nickel each year through 2018.

The Transit Authority says the fare increases are needed to offset rising fuel and operating costs.

"To lessen the impacts on our citizens instead of just hitting them with one big 45 cent hit, we thought it would be best to spread it out over a four year period," said Transit Director David Hamilton

He says the transit authority is planning a public hearing in May to get rider feedback on the proposal.

After that, his offices will appear before city leaders to get approval for the new fees.
