Public Health PrepareAthon! coming soon

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Disaster preparedness, response and recovery teams in Southwest Georgia will join others across the nation to raise community awareness about the importance of being prepared.

It's called America's PrepareAthon! and it happens on April 30th, where individuals and organizations can take simple, specific steps to increase their preparedness for potential emergencies.

America's PrepareAthon! is held twice a year, in the spring and fall. The program helps individuals, organizations and businesses:

  • Recognize disasters that could happen in their community and the impact they could have on the public's health and the community's healthcare delivery system
  • Know what to do to be safe and mitigate potential health risks due to disasters
  • Practice drills and share information to better prepare the community
  • Participate in community resilience planning

For Southwest Health District Office of All Hazard Preparedness to reach its goals, it will:

  • Conduct a series of tabletop exercises with county health departments to refine their plans for implementing mass dispensing of medication and ensuring continuity of operations during a disaster
  • Test Public Health's emergency notification system with community health partners throughout the region
  • Work with members of the regional healthcare coalition to identify and address planning gaps and healthcare resource needs in the region's 17-county service area
