Community "Shred-A-Thon" a success

Hundreds of people lined up early for the Community Shred-A-thon.

Cars wrapped around Heritage Bank on Westover Boulevard today. Two trucks were on hand to shred people's old documents like tax records, check books, and mail. Residents say it's a great opportunity to dispose of unwanted paper work safely, and it keeps people from becoming victims of identity theft.

"Because there's so much identity theft going on and this is one way to kind of help prevent that and this is a great service that this bank is doing to take care of that and we appreciate it," said Hope Almond.

Criminals often obtain personal information by digging through people's trash. Last year, 13 million Americans became victims of identity theft.
