Patriots, Lady Tornadoes claim Westover Relays titles

For the last five years, the Westover boys and Monroe girls have dominated the Westover Relays.

That didn't change Friday.

The Patriots and Lady Tornadoes claimed their respective championships at Hugh Mills Stadium Friday night.

For the Patriots, it's their fourth straight boys' title.

"You always want to win your own meet, but to do it four straight years feels good," Westover head track coach Harley Calhoun says. "They just came out here and took care of business. The boys worked hard, did what they normally do, and had a great track meet."

As for the Lady Tornadoes, they got back to their winning ways, picking up their fifth victory in six years. The outlier in that run was in 2013, when Valdosta claimed the title.

Head coach Billy Glanton says it shows how much his team has grown.

"We had a bunch of young girls last year," Glanton says. "They're still young now, but they've grown a lot. It shows that they've grown and matured a lot from last year in to this year."

The highlight of the night came in the girls' 4x400 meter relay.

Monroe and Westover were neck and neck after the first leg, but during the exchange, Monroe's Chakerra Fletcher was tripped.

Fletcher jumped up and grabbed the baton which had rolled off the track and took off, but was now well behind the leaders.

That was no problem for Nikeya Marshall, who took the baton for the final leg 75 yards behind the leaders.

Marshall closed the gap and took the lead to win the race for the Lady Tornadoes.
