Witness recalls Crisp Co. chase

CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

A man we showed you Thursday night being arrested after leading police on a chase in Cordele is still in jail. We're learning more about what happened and his criminal past.

Courtney Harden saw it begin right in front of Professional Touch on 7th avenue in Cordele where she works.

"I saw the man right across the street in the van and he was talking to the police and then I turned around and they started running back to their cars to chase down 41 and 300," said Harden.

Cordele Police believe Robbins assaulted a woman in her van in Ashburn before driving to Cordele.

When he went into a business next to Professional Touch, the woman got out and asked for help.

"When I first drove up there was only one police car out here, but I went out here to get her some tissues and there was three cop cars and one of Expedition cop cars," said Harden.

Harden say the woman came into the store crying.

"It was an uncontrollable sob, is the best you can say it," said Harden.

She asked the store owner to call the Crisp County Sheriff's Office.

"What I know she actually contacted and investigator with the county that has worked a previous case with them, told her where she was," said Harden.

A police officer showed up and tried to question Robbins.

"Mr. Robbins failed to comply and steered the vehicle towards officer Haines and struck him with the side mirror," said Sgt. Taylor, Cordele PD.

Robbins led units on a low speed chase through the city and into the county.

"All we can assume is he drove around for awhile with some officers on his tail and he finally decided his best option was to give up," said Taylor.

That's when he pulled into a parking spot at the sheriff's office and was quickly arrested.

Robbins was arrested by the Crisp County Sheriff Office in November on outstanding warrants from Florida. Robbins did not have a first appearance Friday.
