Be alert before severe weather hits

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Days like today you are going to want to stay indoors, as heavy rain and lightning can creep up on you at anytime. And you don't want to be caught in dangerous situation especially if you an avoid it.

It's reported that in the U.S. inland flooding is considered the leading weather-related cause of death. One of the best things that you can do for yourself and your family is to be prepared. If you purchased the NOAA weather radio this would be a time to use it, especially if the power goes out.  Also, if there is someone in your home that relies on life-sustaining equipment, get a backup power source.

These are the types of things that you will need if and when electricity goes out. If you are a Georgia Power customer, the company offers "outage alerts," they can text, call or even email you with up to date information on the cause and include a time frame for restoration.

You should keep a few items on standby if flooding does occur at home that includes: gloves, boots, sandbags, shovels and plastic sheeting. As for drivers, remember to avoid streets where pockets of water are generating rapidly. You don't know how deep the area is and it doesn't take much for the water to engulf your car. Even larger vehicles such as SUVs or pickups can get stuck, it only takes a couple of feet

We are expecting severe weather to hit southwest Georgia around noon. We have our weather team keeping a close eye on its details. They will be updating information throughout the day through social media as well as on-air and on our website.
