Debris burning starting brush fires across the CSRA, officials say use caution

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

John Cummings came home Thursday to his Valley Park neighborhood and immediately ran for a hose.

Cummings said, "Smoke was coming in the yard and trees were flaming."

Cummings soon found out a brush fire was burning through the area. No one was injured, but four to five storage sheds were lost. Battalion Chief Chris Reid said it was too early to tell Thursday what started the fire.

Captain Brian Brazier with the Aiken Department of Public Safety Fire Division said this time of year, they usually begin with debris piles.

Captain Brazier said, "I would say 80-95 percent of these brush fires are accidents that get out of control."

In Jackson, South Carolina Tuesday, a fire that got out of control when a man was burning his trash burned nearly 7 acres.

Captain Brazier said he recommends being extra careful this time of year.

"As windy as it is with the low humidity, it isn't a good time to be burning. The best thing to do is haul it to the dump sites developed through the county."

To burn yard debris safely in South Carolina, call 1-800-895-7057 to get a burn permit.
