(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South man is recovering at a Memphis hospital tonight after his home was destroyed during early morning storms on Friday.

John Hess woke up on the side of a gravel road after his mobile home blew over; his mattress was in the middle of a field along with almost everything else that was in his home.

"It's unbelievable," notes friend Bo Reid.

Friends came by to see the damage for themselves. Window frames are bent in half and debris is scattered hundreds of yards away, but Hess is alive in Memphis.

"We wish the best for him. Like I say, Johnny is a super nice guy, they don't come any better," added Reid.

But how Hess got on the gravel road might amaze you. He woke up hurt outside of his home that is now gone.

"He crawled on one of these tractors and drove down to a friend of his," said Reid.

Hess is now at Regional Medical Center in Memphis. His family says he has some broken ribs and will need days to recover.

There are no trees in the area to block the wind gusts that were reported up to 60 miles per hour. Limbs broke through AC Smith's house in Quitman County while his family was sleeping.

Damage is so bad that he is considering starting all over.

"With the materials and prices ... It's several thousand dollars," said Smith.

Smith knows he is fortunate compared to others like John Hess. Friends say Hess just bought the home and almost everything in it, which is now scattered throughout the mud.

"You can see all of the appliances there and everything that was a brand new mobile home," said Smith.

At last check Hess was going through several surgeries Friday, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
