Phenix City gears up for month long walking history tours

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

The Phenix City Chamber of Commerce is taking part in the state-wide initiative to give tours of the city on foot.

They're offering walkers a reminder, says city councilman Jim Cannon, of the city's history for the second year.

"I don't care who you are or what town, individual, group or anybody else, you've got a history," Cannon points out.

Starting at the Phenix City Amphitheater, Cannon will guide walkers through history dating back as far back as 1864.

Cannon says, "We'll start in Girard here and then we'll come down to the river walk here. We'll walk up the river walk. We'll be showing pictures."

Bringing the group across this bridge for a literal trip down memory lane.

Cannon tells us he'll turn through the pages of his picture book to show the most significant memories and landmarks in Phenix City, like the 1916 illegal whiskey bust, he says, still ranks as the largest in the state of Alabama and the flood of 1929.

Even more important, Cannon says, is the focus on Phenix City's future landmarks like the upcoming zip line across the Chattahoochee River.

He says the tour highlights the city past, present and future.

"I think it's very important to see where we come from, but to showcase where we're at and where we're going," Cannon explains.

The tours will be given each Saturday in the month of April, starting at 10 a.m. at the Phenix City amphitheater. Cannon says the tour should take about an hour.
