Officials at Dobbins Air Reserve Base say they're prepared for active shooter situation

MARIETTA, GA (CBS46) -

Security is always tight at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, but as the second on-base shooting in five years at Fort Hood, TX, proves, security threats don't always come from the outside.

Authorities said Wednesday, U.S. Army Spc. Ivan Lopez opened fire killing three people and injuring 16 others before killing himself.

Officials at Dobbins said they have learned from the tragedies and are teaching people on base how to handle a similar situation.

"In an event that an active shooter situation does happen, you have the option to run. You have the option to hide and the last resort is to fight for your life. That is what we are teaching," said Master Sgt. Jason Brown, of the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Brown said the skills base personnel are learning can be used anywhere.

"The same training that you are getting at the work place, utilize it at home, utilize it at school, just be aware what to do. Those same concepts and principals, you can adopt them anywhere," Brown said.

But Brown said unfortunately, in the end, nothing is 100 percent secure.

"You can't predict these. You can't predict them at all and that is the main problem, that they are so unpredictable," Brown said.
