Harry James to fill Dougherty Co. District 5 Commission seat

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A new face will soon fill a recently vacated seat on the Dougherty County Commission.

Leaders announced on Monday that long time county resident Harry James will fill the district five seat.

Former County Vice Chair and commissioner Gloria Gaines represented the district for the last six years, until she stepped down earlier this year to seek the County Chair position.

James lost to Gaines in the 2008 election, but has been regularly attending meetings since 2006. He said he hopes to focus on economic growth as soon as he begins.

"Well, I'd like to see some of the industry that we've lost come back," said James. "I'd [also] like to see better safety concerns with people in the county."

He was the only candidate to sign up during the special election qualifiers, and won by default. He will officially begin on June 2nd, and will hold the seat until 2016.
