High school friends become game day foes for a spot in the Elite Eight

PALO ALTO, Calif. (WIS) Familiar foes will square off Sunday when the Gamecocks take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Sweet 16.

Old friendships will be cast aside when former Spring Valley High School teammates Asia Dozier and Xylina McDaniel meet.

"It was a good time," Dozier said. "Winning games is always fun, we both have great competitive spirits that we carried on to the college level."

McDaniel said they still remain close despite playing on rival teams.

"It's not going to be all fun and games during the game, but I mean after the game, no matter what we are still going to be close," McDaniel said.

While at Spring Valley, both had hoped to play basketball at the same university, but things changed when McDaniel decided to attend the University of North Carolina instead of her hometown university.

"It was a pretty hard decision because I've been there for so long, but I mean getting out of Columbia and going to Chapel Hill was the best decision I've made," McDaniel said. "The school is beautiful and I've made bonds on this team like no other."

The old allegiances are done as new ones form with rivals from high school ball.

The Gamecocks Aleighsa Welch and the Tar Heels N'Dea Bryant played at Goose Creek together.

"It's crazy, I never thought I'd be teammates with somebody who was a rival of mine back in high school but it's a great time, we try to have fun with it so it's going to be a good time," Welch said.

Bryant said she remains focused.

"It's always hard to believe, but like I said I love her but I definitely want to beat her," Bryant said.

Pride and more importantly a spot in the Elite Eight is at stake for a pair of former teammates when North Carolina and South Carolina lace it up Sunday night.

Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2.
