LMPD announces safety detail for UofL/UK Sweet 16 match-up

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Louisville Metro Police Department has announced its plan to ensure UofL and UK fan celebrations in Derby City remain orderly and safe Friday night when the rival teams face off in the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals in Indianapolis.

LMPD, in conjunction with the University of Louisville Division of Public Safety, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections and other government agencies, has developed a plan to address traffic-related issues and unlawful behavior associated with this type of event, according to a news release issued by the LMPD Media Relations Office Thursday afternoon.

The police detail for Friday, March 28 includes:

  • Four separate branches of uniformed police officers whose focus will be crime prevention and traffic control and crime prevention teams that will address any trouble locations that arise.
  • A distinct area assigned to each branch of law enforcement officers that will be patrolled by foot and/or vehicles.
  • Multiple roving units.
  • Assistance from LMPD for the University of Louisville Police Department in the area surrounding UofL's campus.
  • A plan to allow traffic flow throughout the detail area unless a public safety risk is identified.
  • Four crime control/traffic branches within the detail area.
    • Branch 1: Broadway from First Street to 28th Street.
    • Branch 2: Broadway from 28th Street to Southwestern Parkway.
    • Branch 3: Waterfront/downtown business district/Fourth Street Live! area/Bardstown Road-Baxter Avenue corridor.
