LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A family thought their beloved pet was missing forever…until she showed up over a year later in Pennsylvania!

Cindy and Ernie Romans have been searching for Sassy since she disappeared 17 months ago. She was let out while the family was moving and never returned.

"Didn't know, we kept on waiting for her to come home because she always came home. Always…except for this time," said Cindy Romans.

Sassy ended up in a Boyd County kill shelter and that's where members of the Forever Home Beagle Rescue saved her from being put down. Then she traveled three states and went to live with a foster family in Brentwood, Pennsylvania.

Hope Wilson and April Smith have had Sassy for two months. They thought because she had been in a shelter for some time, she didn't have a microchip. However, a trip to the vet proved them wrong.

"They said yes, she is, and her name is Sassy. As soon as she said Sassy, her head turned and her tail started wagging right away."

In just a few short days this family will be complete. The Romans plan to pick up Sassy on Friday.

The Boyd County Animal Shelter won't comment on why they never checked for a microchip.
