BRUNSWICK, GA (WTOC) -

The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the scene where a Piper PA-44 crashed on Monday night.

The plane with two people on board crashed at 7:10 p.m., 4 miles east of Brunswick Golden Isles Airport in Brunswick, according to the FAA. The plane departed from Concord, NC, and was headed to the Jacksonville Executive Airport/Craig Field near Jacksonville, FL. The aircraft is not registered in North Carolina.

Police Chief Matt Doering briefed the media at a news conference Tuesday afternoon about the crash. Officials said that they have not yet recovered the plane. They believe it's in the water at Wally's Leg near Mackay's River.

They are using sonar and have detected an area of interest and have divers in the water. They have recovered a few pieces of the plane but not enough to identify it.

Investigators said they do not believe weather was a factor in the crash. Officials said no distress call was made nor did the plane try to make contact to Brunswick Airport prior to crashing.

The FAA is investigating the crash. The NTSB will work to determine the probable cause of the crash.

Investigators plan to search until dark and continue searching on Wednesday.
