AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Americus Police are searching for a man they say attempted to rob a senior citizen in front of a busy post office Tuesday morning.

Investigators say 65 year-old Janet Wood was walking to her car after leaving the post office at 128 E. Forsyth street around 9:30 a.m. when a man ran up behind her and demanded her purse.

The woman refused and instead hit the car alarm button on her car keys. Police say the suspect ran off toward East Jefferson street after hearing the noise.

"I think she was very thoughtful when she was approached with this information," said Sgt. Anthony Jackson with Americus Police. "She took some very effective action to activate the panic alarm, which made the suspect flee the area."

Jackson said the man wasn't carrying a weapon. He said no one else saw the crime.

The suspect is described as a black male, about 5 ft. 9 in. tall, wearing a dark sweatshirt and stocking hat.

Nothing was taken, and no injuries were reported.
