AXSON, GA (WALB) -

An Axson man is accused of shooting a hunting rifle at a woman while driving on the highway early Monday morning. He is being held in the Atkinson County jail.

Deputies say 31 year-old Brian Keith Mancil was riding with 38 year-old Frederick Lee Dillingham on US 82 when they pulled in front of a 25 year-old woman and stopped around 1am.  Investigators say Mancil then fired a rifle at his ex-girlfriend, but missed.  Deputies said Dillingham then sped off.

Deputies responded to the 911 call and were interviewing the victim at her home, when they saw the suspects drive by and speed off, leading to a short chase before deputies caught up to the men and arrested them.

Dillingham was charged with DUI and was released on bond. Mancil remains in custody and faces aggravated assault charges.  Investigators are working to determine if Dillingham knew Mancil planned to shoot at the victim, and may charge him with aggravated assault pending further investigation.

No injuries were reported.
