Lowndes Co. health officials raising awareness about TB

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Lowndes County health officials are trying to raise awareness about Tuberculosis.

Today is national Tuberculosis day. It is a day dedicated to educating people about the disease and reminding people that Tuberculosis is still a relevant disease.

"It is something that we face locally every year. We have, approximately, anywhere from 5 to 15 cases each year. So, this is not an old disease that is rare, but is something that we encounter each year," explained Brenda Mimms, Infectious Disease Program Director for the South Health District.

Mimms added that tuberculosis is an airborne disease and can affect anyone at any age, but people with weakened immune systems are the most vulnerable.
