Sumter County to install sirens

Posted: Updated:

Sumter County is installing a new weather warning system.

It includes 20 sirens that will be triggered automatically if the National Weather Service issues a warning. Residents can also sign up to receive immediate text and email alerts.

Leaders say technology has changed a lot since that 2007 tornado killed two people in Americus.

"In '07 I didn't even have a weather radar in my house and that was one of the first things I got after the tornado," said Americus Mayor Barry Blount. "So I think it gives me a piece of mind, this new system. Not only the sirens but notifying people by text messages and emails if there is an event that is going to occur.

All those new sirens will be tested at noon on Monday March 31st.
