AFD Stresses Kitchen Safety

A rash of kitchen fires has Albany Fire officials once again warning you not to leave food cooking unattended.

Chief James Carswell says his department has worked four fires that started in the kitchen.

One did substantial damage but luckily no one was hurt in any of the fires.  Chief Carswell says if you have to leave the kitchen, take something with you like a potholder to remind you that you have something on the stove.

And a working smoke detector is a must. "In addition to that you need to make sure you have working smoke detectors in your home at all times. To alert you long before the fire gets to such a level that it would prevent you from getting out," said AFD Chief James Carswell.

Chief Carswell also recommends those who rent their homes carry renter's insurance.   He says rates in our area are affordable based on Albany's fire service rating.
