ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Judge Herbert Phipps, the Chief Judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals accepted the Nestor Award Thursday night at the Albany Welcome Center.

The award goes to people who contribute to and preserve Georgia's legal history.

"It is a great honor to receive this award," Phipps said. "It is a great honor always to be recognized by your peers and for all of my life I have been a participant in Georgia's legal history in one way or another."

Judge Phipps is a Baker County native. He started practicing law in Albany in 1971.

He served as a magistrate, State, Juvenile and superior court judge in Dougherty County before being appointed to the Court of Appeals in 1999.
