Pothole problems persist after icy winter storms

Winter ice storms left major pothole problems on roads across Georgia.

Now the Department of Transportation is working to much of the damage to roads. The department has already spent $13 million on cleanup and pothole repair just in Atlanta.

Leaders hope to get reimbursed by FEMA. Damage in south Georgia, however, was minor.

"The ice that we did get at the January storm was mainly on bridges," said Communications Officer Nita Birmingham. "We got some road ice, but it was kind of sporadic. So we don't really expect a lot of increase."

Transportation officials say they will use money from the department's $228 million maintenance fund to cover the winter weather highway issues.
