ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The South Georgia Cancer Coalition received national recognition today for its fight against cancer.

Mutual of America gave the organization a 2013 Honorable Mention Award for the Community Cancer Screening Program. Key players throughout the 32-county area were recognized during a luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Albany.

Organizers said the effort helped those who weren't in the health system get treatment.

"So what we know is that we're reaching people, getting them into health care and either preventing cancers or finding them very early where they're most treatable and curable," said Diane Fletcher, South GA Cancer Coalition CEO.

Fletcher said early detection saves health care dollars for the community. She said the Public Health Department, physician groups and regional hospitals played key roles in the effort.

She hopes to expand screening and treatment throughout the region over the next year.
