Second person dies in East Dougherty wreck

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Two people are dead following a Dougherty County crash that injured several other people near Hill Road and Clark Avenue Extension about 11:00AM.

Dougherty County Police say a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling east on Clark Avenue and hit a Buick Lucerne which was traveling north on Hill Road. Police say the driver of the Buick pulled into the intersection after stopping at the stop sign.  The driver died yesterday, and the female passenger died last night. Their names have not been released.

"Unfortunately this roadway that we're on right now has a high speed limits, so it's a high traffic area with high speed limits in the area, so unfortunately, with cross traffic this way it does result sometimes in accidents of this caliber," said DCP's Capt. Tom Jackson.

Authorities say when you come to an intersection at a multi-lane highway, it's important to look both ways more than once.

"Especially on roadways like this one, you have a horizon here, where vehicles are coming up over the horizon. By the time you looked, there may be a vehicle already coming over that horizon, and we have 55 to 65 mph speed limits in the area like this it's easy to miss a vehicle coming up on you," said Jackson.

Other drivers were detoured around the crash scene, which took crews about an hour to clean up.

The passenger in that car was also seriously injured.
