Watch out for bicyclists on the roads

Gene Kirk, Breakaway Cycles Bike Shop Owner Gene Kirk, Breakaway Cycles Bike Shop Owner
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany man is out of the hospital after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle Monday night.

Dougherty County Police cited Diann Cowart with following too closely after she hit Lonnie Wormley in the 5700 block on Newton Road. Cowart told police she didn't see Wormley. An Albany bike shop owner encourages drivers to be more cautious because more cyclists are hitting the roads.

"Be aware, take note that there are going to be cyclists out on the road and there are going to be more of them as the summer goes on. It is state law to give the rider three feet of space as they pass and that would help tremendously," said Gene Kirk.

Kirk says cyclists should wear light-colored clothing and have a blinking LED lights on their bikes.   They should also ride with traffic and stick to the far side of the road.
