IRS: Check for unclaimed refunds

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Georgians may lose out on millions of dollars they're owed by the Internal Revenue Service if they don't claim the money soon.

IRS officials say that $28 million in refunds were turned over to the Treasury Department last year because they went unclaimed.

Most of those affected are college students who worked part-time jobs or retirees who did not file tax returns.

You lose your right to claim the money after 3 years.  The deadline to claim your refund from the 2010 tax season is coming up.

"Look at your W-2's for 2009.  Look at you 1099-R, which is your retirement money.  If there is any withholding whatsoever, that's your money.  In order to get that money back however you have got to file a tax return by April 15th of this year," said Mark Green, IRS Media Relations manager.

The IRS urges people who earned income in 2010, but did not file a return, to file before April 15th so you can recover that withholding income you paid.
