Sylvania schools contemplate options for calamity days

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Many districts in the area are designing plans to make up calamity days from this record-breaking winter. Sylvania school leaders met early Wednesday afternoon to discuss what the district will do to make up four days.

Nothing has been finalized yet, but administrators met with parents to discuss some of the options.

They do have a draft of what they are considering. Leaders would like to eliminate three remaining late starts, which would make up one full school day. They also mentioned adding an hour to school days for the majority of April, excluding Fridays. That would leave them with one day to add on to the end of the school year at the high schools and junior high schools, but two days for elementary schools. The high and junior high levels have four days to make up; the elementary schools have five days to make up.

Superintendent Brad Reiger says it would be ideal to make up the majority of time in April, not only to allow families time for summer vacations, but also to prepare for testing.

"We have standardized tests, the Ohio Achievement Test for grades three through eight, and those are the last few days of April, first week of May. So, obviously, any instructional time in front of that would be beneficial," explained Reiger.

Parents say they understand the situation.

"They're trying to come up with the best solution, whether you child is in kindergarten or a senior in high school, and as it was said, everyone has to lean in and give. There is no perfect answer," said Gretchen Owad.

"They all have a huge problem that they have to solve and they are trying to do it the best that they can," said Jennifer Tuschman. "My kids may be a little bit more tired at the end of the day, but we can work around it."

The school hopes to have a decision made by next week.
