ATLANTA (CBS46) -

It appears Georgia Tech students have succeeded in keeping with a very dangerous tradition - stealing the "T" from Tech Tower. However, the missing letter was quickly found.

The Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Administration Building, otherwise known as Tech Tower, has five-foot-tall letters that spell TECH hanging atop it on each of its four sides.

A tradition that began in 1969, students have orchestrated complex plans to scale the building and steal the letter "T" off the building.

On Tuesday, officials discovered the "T" was gone, the first time in 13 years the prank has been successful.

Later in the day however, the missing "T" was found and the student responsible was apprehended.

As tradition states, the "T" would normally be returned at the halftime of the homecoming football game. It's obvious that part of the tradition will not happen.

In recent years, the university banned the theft citing safety concerns.

According to the school's website, the Student Government Association started a new campaign - 'Keep the "T" in Tech' - to remind students of the tradition's origin and to encourage students to respect the property and signage across Tech's camps.

Georgia Tech sent the following statements:

"We are aware that a 'T' is missing from Tech Tower. Defacing campus property is not a tradition that should inspire feelings of pride." And, "Georgia Tech continues to be concerned about the safety of our campus community when these types of events occur."

Georgia Tech police in the process of determining what charges will be filed, and the incident has been referred to the Office of Student Integrity.
