ARABI, GA (WALB) -

The search for a Cordele man accused of stabbing his ex-wife multiple times ended Monday evening as investigators made an arrest in Arabi.

The Crisp County Sheriff's Office said 42 year-old Efren Rantonya Hawkins was taken into custody less than 12 hours after the manhunt began.

Deputies said Hawkins broke into his ex-wife's attic around 8:15 a.m., then jumped down and attacked her in front of a young child.

Six warrants were taken on Hawkins related to the incident.

Deputies said Hawkins took the victim's Ford Explorer, which was later recovered on Spires Road near the Crisp/Turner County line.

The victim was taken to Crisp Regional Hospital and treated for her injuries. Officials wouldn't comment on her condition or other specifics related to the attack.

Hawkins was released from prison last month after serving time for failing to register as a sex offender. Now he could face serious jail time for multiple crimes including aggravated assault, aggravated battery, burglary, theft by taking, cruelty to children in the third degree, and a parole violation.
