CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

Crisp County Sheriff's deputies and US Marshals are searching for a Cordele man accused of stabbing his ex-wife multiple times Monday morning.

Deputies said 42 year-old Efren Rantonya Hawkins broke into his ex-wife's attic around 8:15am then jumped down and attacked her in front of a young child.  They don't know where he is, and are turning to the public to help track him down.

"We now have six warrants on Mr. Hawkins related to this incident," said Sgt. Ben Bray, Crisp County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Hawkins took the victim's Ford Explorer, which was later recovered on Spires Road near the Crisp/Turner County line. "We're tracking down some more leads at this time, waiting for some more information to come in and hopefully that will point us in the right direction," said Bray.

The victim was taken to Crisp Regional Hospital and treated for her injuries. Deputies wouldn't comment on her condition or other specifics related to the attack.

"Because of the severity of the crime and the events that have occurred and we are still actively seeking the offender, we are withholding the victim's name and address just to protect her," Bray said.

The sergeant said Hawkins was released from prison last month after serving time for failing to register as a sex offender. Now he could face serious jail time for multiple crimes. "Aggravated Assault, aggravated battery, burglary, theft by taking, cruelty to children in the third degree, and a parole warrant," Bray said.

The suspect could be armed, and may not be traveling alone.

"Usually when you do have a fleeing fugitive, they do reach out to family and friends to gain transportation," said Bray.

Deputies said they're working with the community to find Hawkins.  He's 5' 9" and weighs 190 pounds. Deputies said you shouldn't confront him. Instead call 911, and give a good clothing or vehicle description.
