BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The streets of downtown were full of green Saturday for Biloxi's 36th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. People were out catching beads, shamrocks and there was even a special guest of honor.

Governor Phil Bryant came down to enjoy the parade. He said that he and the first lady have made it a tradition to come to Biloxi for this event. His favorite part?

"I think seeing if I can catch some beads," said Bryant.

Why come to the coast? Surely there are other parades across the state. Bryant said it's all about the people and the atmosphere.

"Well, the Gulf Coast is a little bit more outgoing and they enjoy these types of events so much. It gives us a chance to get away from the Capital, come down and see our friends on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and enjoy St. Patty's Day," said Bryant.

Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway seemed to be enjoying himself too.

"It's just nice to have everybody having a great time here in Biloxi. We look forward to it every year," said Holloway.

It was up to him and the Governor to toast the Grand Marshall float. He said above all else, days like this make him love his job.

He said the turnout was a lot better than the recent rainy Mardi Gras parade. Just like Mardi Gras, there was one thing that everyone was after; the beads.

Shanay Condrey and Constance Conrad were down from Enterprise, AL. They came to the Coast for Condrey's birthday, but the luck of the Irish brought them to this parade route.

"Oh my god, the beads! This is our first time here, and it is so fun," Condrey said.

Just like the Governor, they said they hoped to make this a tradition.

"Oh yes, we will be back," said Conrad.

There were 46 floats in the parade. The Grand Marshal was Jim Hardaman and the Colleen was Janin Love. The event was sponsored by the Hibernia Marching Society.
