ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The community had a chance to learn more about how to preventcrime in their neighborhood today.

At the Government Center downtown, the Dougherty County PoliceDepartment held their first Neighborhood Watch program. Police gave tips on how to protect your identity, and keep yourhome safe.Vendors including Central Monitoring, were there to talk abouttheir products and services.  Police say the best way to be safe is having the tools to avoidbeing a victim of a crime.

"A lot of people are victims of crime because they don't dosimple things as be more safe, be more prepared, security their household ortheir property more. So, what we're trying to do is actually provide them withinformation to maybe prevent them from being a victim of crime in the firstplace," said Capt. Tom Jackson.

Captain Jackson says he hopes the department will make this anannual event.
