VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

South Georgia Special Olympians went for the gold Thursday.

Athletes from schools in six South Georgia Counties competed in the Spring Special Olympics in Lowndes County.

There were various running events, softball, and an area where the students could hang out between events.

"This year, we are very fortunate to host 430 teachers and students. It is our largest participation ever, my favorite part are the hugs and the awards ceremonies. I love the high fives, I love seeing the joy on their faces,"  said Tammy Crosby, Event Coordinator.

The Fall Special Olympics will be held in October.
