SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

A Worth County woman says a law enforcement impersonator tried to scam her out of thousands of dollars.

Melissa Pate says someone left a message on her answering machine claiming to work for the Worth County Sheriff's Office. She says the caller threatened to arrest her if she didn't pay a $7,000 pay day loan. She contacted the Worth County Sheriff's Office which is now investigating the scam.

"So I told him I'd have to talk to a lawyer about that, you know to find out if it was a scam. Because I knew I didn't owe nobody no money," said Melissa Pate.

"We're investigating it, we got a recording of the conversation and the conversation of her calling him back and we're looking into it from that stand point," said Sheriff Jeff Hobby.

Sheriff Hobby says if you think you're the victim of a scam you should immediately contact your local law enforcement agency.
