Friends and family members are remembering a Worth County man who died in wreck through one of his favorite sports. Organizers say a roping and barrel racing fundraiser will celebrate Jake Williams' life and support his two year old daughter.
Cowboys are all saddled up and ready to compete for a good cause. They'll participate in a fundraiser to support their dear friend.
"He was one of the people who would give you the shirt off his back, whether he knew you or not. If you needed it Jake had it," said Marilynn Mims.
He was killed in a car accident at the intersection of Highway 112 and Shingler Road on January 17th. It was his 23rd birthday. Mac Walters roped with Williams for four years at an arena in Doles.
"I'm friends with him on facebook so that morning everybody was telling him happy birthday. That afternoon everybody was heartbroken because he had the accident and they was finding out that he had passed away," said Walters.
Friends and other cowboys around South Georgia are putting on the Jake Williams Memorial Team Roping and Barrel Racing fundraiser here at Bowlegs Arena in Sumner. Proceeds from the two day event will go to a trust fund for his two year old daughter Adalynn.
"We love this family a lot and it's just a way of our community pulling together to help one in our community." said Marilynn Mims. Ropers and drum runners of all ages can participate in the event. Organizers have already received thousands of dollars from several sponsors.
"We're not coming here to mourn his death, we're coming here to celebrate what he done and celebrate his life," said Walters. A life that was cut short, but one that will be remembered for years to come.
The Barrel Racing will take place on April 4th and the team roping will be on April 5th. To participate in these events you can contact the following people below:
