Lowndes deputies seize marijuana

Vu Cao Vu Cao

Deputies of the Lowndes Co. Sheriff's office caught a man hauling 11 pounds of pot last night.

On Tuesday evening around 8:40 a deputy noticed extremely dark-tinted windows on a Lexus SUV heading south on I-75.

The deputy stopped the driver, 39-year-old Vu Thanh Cao, of Rex, Georgia, and explained the purpose in the traffic stop, and noticed that he was visibly nervous, and became more nervous as time went on.

A drug sniffing dog alerted on the vehicle, and deputies found the 11 pounds of marijuana hidden in a duffel bag in the vehicle. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $33,000.

"This is 11 pounds of marijuana that's not going' to its intended recipient. We're extremely proud that our patrol deputies were able to make this stop and get this dope off the streets," said Lt. Stryde Jones of the Lowndes Co. Sheriff's Office.

"This is a fantastic job for any deputy to take a traffic stop that started out with something as simple as window tinting and to look beyond that traffic stop and find the true crime that's being committed," said Jones. "11 pounds of marijuana, that's a lot of pot. Certainly it intended to be sold by somebody."

Cao was arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana, and transported to the Lowndes County Jail where he remains.

He will appear in the Lowndes County Magistrate Court this afternoon for an arraignment and bond hearing.
