Law enforcers see increase in security check requests

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty County Sheriff's office has seen a huge increase in requests for security checks on homes.

When you're out of town you can ask the sheriff's office to send a deputy by your home to make sure everything is okay.

Sheriff Sproul says the number of checks jumped 87-percent last year.

"I think more people are conscious of things around them and they are more fearful of the environment around them, maybe they've had a shooting or something go array in their neighborhood that's had them saying maybe I need to protect myself more or have better security," says Dougherty County Sheriff Kevin Sproul.

Last year, they handled 23,000 requests compared to 12,000 in the previous year.
