Posted: Updated:

Many South Georgians went to church today to commemorate Ash Wednesday.

Dozens of people attended the noon service at St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Albany.

Priests marked the foreheads of the worshipers as an outward sign of their belief in Jesus Christ as their savior.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, The 40 days leading up to Easter. Church leaders say it is a time for Christians to pray, fast, and give.

This day touches them deeply, said Father Finbarr Stanton of St. Teresa's. "They want to be part of something good, larger, better. And Lent gives them the opportunity to do that.

Easter Sunday is April 20th.
