VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

It's tax season...and tax experts encourage people to file early in order to maximize their refunds.

Tax experts say waiting until the last minute to file your taxes can cause you to get in a hurry and miss out on potential deductions. There are several new tax laws this year, so it's especially important to get started on your taxes now.

"There are a lot of new tax laws, specifically targeting high net worth earners; anyone who earns over $250,000 a year," said Buffie Purselle, tax expert and managing member of Buffie The Tax Heiress LLC. Purselle is based in Atlanta, but was in her Valdosta office on Wednesday to help some Valdostans with their taxes.

"There's a new medicare surtax, there's also a new net investment income tax. In addition to that, there are limitations on itemized deductions that you can take now if you earn over $250 thousand a year," Purselle continued.

The deadline to file your taxes is Tuesday, April 15th.
