Grand Jury likes sheriff program

Posted: Updated:

The Dougherty County Grand Jury urged county leaders to help fund youth crime prevention programs run by Sheriff Kevin Sproul's office.

The Sheriff's "Scared Straight" program was featured on a national television show. It and other youth crime prevention programs are run by donations from the community.

Grand Jurors from the January court term think those programs deserve public funding.

"Along with the Sheriff's other programs that try to prevent crime, they are supported by donations.  So what I guess is asked is that government provide some funding," said Greg Edwards, Dougherty D. A.

In their presentments, the grand jurors also called on county commissioners to take a serious look at consolidating the Dougherty County Police Department into the Sheriff's Office to save tax money.
