CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

Law enforcement agencies have lowered their flags to half staff following the death of Sheriff Donnie Haralson, who died Tuesday night after a decade-long fight with cancer.

Haralson was the longest-serving sheriff in the county's history, and was greatly respected by citizens and law enforcement colleagues.

He was named Georgia Sheriff of the year in 2010.

He was first appointed sheriff by Governor Joe Frank Harris in February 1985, after former sheriff Wyatt Forrest was removed from office, and was then was elected to office.

Chief Deputy Billy Hancock will serve as interim sheriff until a replacement is named.

"He put himself on the back burner on many occasions.  And anybody that's in law enforcement for the true reason knows that it's not about the wage, it's not about the hours, it's about what you can do for your community.  We're talking about a man who lost his father in 1975 in the line of duty, but didn't let that waiver him, still had that fire and that burn to come out and serve the people day," said Hancock.

His funeral is set for 4:00pm Friday, at First Baptist Church of Cordele, on the corner of 6th Street and 13th Ave.
