Many South Georgians seeking assistance with high heating bills

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty County agency that helps people with home heating bills now has 2000 people on a waiting list, with more calls for help every day.

The Southwest Georgia Community Action Council says the harsh winter caused many more people in the 14-counties they serve to have trouble paying their bills.

Many people calling the Dougherty County Neighborhood Service Center say they've never had energy bills this high.

"Not really like this winter," said Neighborhood Service Center Manager Gwendolyn Covin.   "This was really a harsh winter, so we are seeing a lot of people who we normally wouldn't see come into the office trying to get the assistance."

The federal grant money is available on a first come, first served basis.

People in Dougherty County can sign up for an appointment by calling 883-1365.

Lee County the number is 759-2089.
